Aden, août 1880 : Arthur Rimbaud et ses compagnons de L’Univers

On se souvient qu’il y a deux mois, une photographie inconnue de Rimbaud, la première montrant avec netteté ses traits d’adulte, a été rendue publique. Elle montre l’ancien poète à Aden, assis au sein d’un groupe, sur la véranda de l’Hôtel de l’Univers.

Le document, qui figurait parmi une trentaine de clichés d’Aden à la fin du XIXe siècle, provenait des archives de Jules Suel, propriétaire de cet hôtel où Rimbaud résida à diverses reprises et où il se fit parfois adresser son courrier. Le poète reconverti dans le négoce fut en outre en relations d’affaires, notamment au moment de son expédition d’armes à travers le désert dankali, avec ce Suel qui était une personnalité importante de la communauté française locale — une communauté au demeurant fort réduite, dont les membres sont connus, et nous serions bien en peine, après une trentaine d’années de travaux sur le sujet, de citer un bien grand nombre de noms de ressortissants français dans l’Aden de cette époque.

En publiant cette photographie de Rimbaud, nous escomptions que des lecteurs pourraient nous aider à identifier les autres figurants de ce » coin de table » d’Aden, à mieux en cerner le contexte, voire de situer la photographie dans le temps. Cet espoir n’était pas vain, et les choses n’ont pas traîné, puisque nous sommes aujourd’hui en mesure de dater le document de manière très précise et d’indiquer l’identité probable de la majorité des personnages.

Il n’était certes pas aisé, cent trente ans plus tard, de placer des noms sur des visages. Et pourtant, on pouvait se demander qui sont les deux personnages debout, celui de gauche fixant l’objectif avec une expression farouche et décidée, celui de droite photographié comme dans le mouvement, souriant et portant son regard vers la dame assise au premier plan, en paraissant la contempler avec une sorte de bienveillance réjouie ? De même, qui peuvent bien être les deux barbus assis à gauche, l’un déjà quelque peu déplumé et à la physionomie soucieuse ou dédaigneuse, l’autre au visage plus impassible et semblant chaussé de souliers à talons ?

Qui est l’individu assis au centre, à la droite de Rimbaud ? Il est apparemment le plus âgé du groupe, et son étrange costume à carreaux l’a déjà fait entrer dans la geste rimbaldienne sous le surnom de Pyjama. Surtout, qui est la dame à droite, accoudée à son fauteuil, porteuse d’une alliance et arborant un ventre à la courbe généreuse ? Sa présence détonne quelque peu, car les Européennes étaient alors plutôt rares à Aden. Une autre question, non moins essentielle, était : de quel séjour de Rimbaud dans la ville date la photographie ? La présence de tel ou tel figurant allait-elle permettre de l’établir ?

Peu de temps après la publication de la photographie, Jacqueline Sibertin-Blanc (née Lucereau), descendante collatérale de l’explorateur Édouard-Henri Lucereau, nous contacta pour nous signaler qu’elle avait formellement reconnu ce dernier, par la comparaison avec une photographie, dans le personnage debout à gauche. La consultation d’autres portraits photographiques de Lucereau nous permit peu après de confirmer tout à fait l’identification. Né en 1850, cet explorateur avait obtenu du Gouvernement français la mission de rechercher les sources de la Sobat, affluent du Nil bleu. Il résida à Aden à partir d’octobre 1879, logeant précisément à l’Hôtel de l’Univers, en faisant deux séjours prolongés à Zeilah, de l’autre côté de la Mer Rouge. En août 1880, ayant reçu de Delagenière, le gérant du vice-consulat de France à Aden, l’assurance que sa caravane allait enfin pouvoir partir à la conquête des régions inconnues qu’il comptait parcourir en Abyssinie, Lucereau reprit la mer et, après trois semaines de marche dans le désert, arriva à Harar, où il bénéficia un temps de l’hospitalité d’Alfred Bardey, le futur patron de Rimbaud à Aden. Mais son aventure tourna tragiquement : en octobre, il fut tué à Ouarabelly, dans le territoire des Itous-Gallas, à une journée de marche à l’ouest de Harar.

L’identification de Lucereau sur la photographie est une grande chance, car elle permet de dater la photographie, de manière absolue, de 1880, qui est l’année où Rimbaud est venu à Aden pour la première fois. Mieux : leur rencontre en cette ville n’a pu avoir lieu qu’en août. En effet, Rimbaud avait débarqué depuis peu de temps dans la colonie anglaise. Dans sa première lettre adressée d’Aden à sa famille, datée du 17 août, il confie qu’il a quitté Chypre » depuis près de deux mois » et a cherché depuis » du travail dans tous les ports de la Mer Rouge, à Djeddah, Souakim, Massaouah, Hodeidah, etc. « . Il ajoute qu’il a été » malade en arrivant » à Aden. La manière dont il rapporte ceci indique que cet ennui de santé ne date pas de la veille, ni de l’avant-veille. Fait piquant, cet épisode fut mentionné en France du vivant de Rimbaud, qui entrait déjà dans sa légende, dans Le Symboliste du 22 octobre 1886 : » Revenant d’Asie (via Suez), Rimbaud arriva malade à Aden. «
L’arrivée de Rimbaud doit donc se situer début août, voire quelques jours plus tôt, car rien ne permet d’exclure que, parti de Chypre en juin, il ait bourlingué quelques semaines d’un port de la Mer Rouge à l’autre et soit arrivé à Aden au cours de la seconde quinzaine de juillet.

S’il n’a rédigé sa première lettre aux siens que le 17 août, c’est qu’il n’a su que la veille qu’il avait désormais un emploi fixe dans cette ville : son engagement dans la factorerie Bardey date de la mi-août (ne sachant s’il allait rester sur place, il n’avait pas écrit à sa famille lors de ses séjours à Djeddah, Souakim, Massaouah et Hodeidah). Au demeurant, Rimbaud ne fut jamais un épistolier empressé de donner à sa mère des nouvelles de ses changements de résidence : les années suivantes, lors de la plupart de ses installations ou réinstallations à Aden ou à Harar, il laissera parfois passer plusieurs semaines après son arrivée avant de lui envoyer un courrier (déjà, à Chypre, il ne lui avait écrit qu’au bout d’un mois de séjour).

Un fait est donc établi : Rimbaud et Lucereau sont simultanément à Aden en ce mois d’août 1880 et, comme tous les Français de l’endroit, fréquentent l’Hôtel de l’Univers, principal lieu de rencontre de la minuscule communauté française. Cette date se trouve d’ailleurs corroborée par la technique photographique qui fut employée pour réaliser le cliché. Il nous faut, sur ce point, dire notre dette aux spécialistes de l’art photographique au XIXe siècle qui nous ont fourni ces précisions. À l’encontre de ce que nous supposions, il n’est pas du tout certain que le flou cernant le visage de Rimbaud soit dû au fait que le modèle ait bougé pendant la pose : le cliché serait plutôt affecté par un léger » bougé de plaque « , qui est, de même que d’autres caractéristiques techniques, typique d’une technique alors toute nouvelle : l’instantané au gélatino-bromure d’argent. Si l’on examine bien la photographie, les autres personnages, ainsi que les objets, ne sont pas tout à fait nets : leurs bords sont masqués par un léger tremblement, plus ou moins apparent selon le contraste des zones, et ceci constitue, d’après M. André Gunthert, une caractéristique des premiers essais d’instantanés au gelatino-bromure d’argent. Avec de telles plaques, le temps de pose était très bref, mais le plus infime choc transparaissait sur le cliché.

Par ailleurs, le cliché apparaît trop clair par excès de pose, avec une surexposition manifeste, le négatif verre au gelatino-bromure d’argent étant beaucoup plus sensible que le collodion, et le tirage ayant été réalisé sur un papier albuminé pas encore adapté à ces nouveaux négatifs. C’est en tout cas cette surexposition qui a donné à Rimbaud, plus que sa maladie récente, cette pâleur de visage : venant de passer quelques mois comme contremaître de chantier sous le soleil de Chypre, son teint devait être plutôt hâlé lorsqu’il arriva à Aden.
Ce sont là des renseignements précieux, mais ils soulèvent un problème : a priori, personne, à Aden, en 1880, ne pouvait disposer d’une technologie aussi moderne, le gelatino-bromure d’argent ou » plaque sèche » s’étant surtout répandu quelques années plus tard, rares furent, de par le monde, les photographes qui l’utilisèrent à cette date, surtout outre-mer. Or, le 25 juillet 1880, l’explorateur-photographe Georges Révoil s’embarquait à Marseille, sur le navire Peï-Ho des Messageries maritimes, à destination d’Aden, où il prit pied le 7 août. Chargé, par le ministère de l’Instruction publique, d’une mission scientifique et géographique dans ce pays somali qu’il allait parcourir pour la seconde fois, il avait emporté un matériel photographique flambant neuf, qu’il comptait tester en réalisant de nombreux clichés à Aden.

Il fut accueilli dans la ville par Jules Suel, qui lui fit naturellement visiter son hôtel, et écrivit par la suite à la Société de géographie de Marseille, laquelle publia son récit dans son bulletin trimestriel : » Je séjourne un mois dans cette ville, où je reçois le meilleur accueil de notre agent consulaire, M. Delagenières , et des résidents et sous-résidents anglais, MM. Godfelow et Hunter, ainsi que de l’honorable M. César Tian [le futur associé de Rimbaud] et de tous nos compatriotes. J’utilise mon séjour à Aden à faire de nombreux essais photographiques « . Sur place, Révoil fera aussi la connaissance de Lucereau avant le départ d’Aden de ce dernier, ce dont il fera part aux Sociétés savantes dont il était membre correspondant. Lui-même n’allait pas s’éterniser à Aden, embarquant le 12 septembre à bord de l’Émile-Héloïse, petit vapeur d’une maison marseillaise.

Si nous avons évoqué la présence de ce Révoil à Aden, en ce mois d’août 1880, c’est parce que, le 28 du même mois, il écrivait de là à Henri Duveyrier, secrétaire de la Société de géographie de Paris, qu’il » se félicit beaucoup de l’emploi du gélatino-bromure de M. Rigault , de Marseille « . Révoil s’était donc embarqué pour Aden avec les plaques photographiques dernier modèle qu’il s’était procurées auprès de la Maison Jules Rigaut, sise au 37, rue Vacon, à Marseille, et dont des réclames de l’époque vantent les » plaques au gélatino-bromure » (ce Rigaut est l’auteur d’une monographie intitulée La Photographie pratique à l’usage des débutants traitant le procédé au gélatino-Bromure d’argent). Quoique la photographie du coin de table d’Aden ne porte aucun nom de photographe, il faut ainsi reconnaître que Révoil n’est pas le plus mauvais candidat pour en être l’auteur.

Revenons aux personnages figurant sur la photographie. En août 1880, Alfred Bardey, futur employeur de Rimbaud, vient de partir pour son voyage d’exploration commerciale en Abyssinie. Son absence sur ce portrait de groupe ne saurait donc surprendre. Avant de connaître la date du cliché, nous nous étions posé la question de son identification au personnage assis à l’extrême-gauche, mais ne regrettons pas aujourd’hui d’avoir formulé cette hypothèse au conditionnel. Le seul portrait connu de Bardey est une photographie communiquée en novembre 1883 à la Société de géographie : son examen établit que Bardey, personnage à la physionomie pleine d’énergie, aux cheveux denses et coupés court, âgé de 26 ans en 1880 (il avait exactement le même âge que Rimbaud) n’est pas le barbu notablement plus âgé et déjà dégarni, même sur les tempes, qui apparaît sur la photographie d’Aden.

En revanche, d’autres personnages ont été reconnus par un de leurs descendants directs, à l’aide de photographies d’époque : l’un, le second barbu, pourrait être Maurice Riès, et une confirmation familiale est en cours, en provenance… d’Aden. Deux autres, Édouard-Joseph Bidault de Glatigné et son épouse. Lui serait le second homme debout, un peu penché et dirigeant son regard vers son épouse Augustine-Émilie, laquelle a toutes les raisons d’être assise : c’est une dame et elle est enceinte de six mois (elle donnera naissance à une petite Cécile, qui verra le jour à Aden le 11 novembre 1880). Bidault, qui a trente ans sur la photographie et a épousé à Aden, le 19 mai 1878, Augustine-Émilie Porte, est bien connu des biographes de Rimbaud : photographe et voyageur — plus photographe que voyageur —, il sera hébergé quelques mois par Rimbaud dans sa maison de Harar. L’italien Robecchi-Bricchetti, qui les reçut l’un et l’autre chez lui le soir de Noël 1888, mentionnera, dans son livre Nell’Harrar, paru en 1896, » Bidault et son ami Rimbaud « .

Bidault, qui s’était lancé dans la photographie dès son arrivée à Aden, aura par la suite le projet — comme Rimbaud — de constituer un album sur le Harar et sa région, et prendra des photographies du pays et de ses habitants. Mais ni Bidault ni Rimbaud ne parviendront à réaliser leur album. Si le nom de Bidault revient à plusieurs reprises dans la correspondance africaine de Rimbaud, parfois avec quelque ironie ( » il vit toujours dans la contemplation « ), il n’y est jamais question d’une Mme Bidault : c’est que celle-ci n’avait pas suivi son époux en Abyssinie, s’étant séparée de lui pour refaire sa vie avec un ancien officier italien reconverti dans le commerce colonial par penchant pour les voyages, qu’elle suivit dans son pays natal avant de revenir du côté de la Mer Rouge. Ceci explique pourquoi, en avril 1888, Alfred Ilg, correspondant de Rimbaud dans le Choa, écrivait au pauvre Bidault : » De votre dame je n’ai pu avoir autre nouvelle que celle qu’elle était parti en Italie, mais personne ne savait me dire où. J’en suis très fâché parce que j’aurais bien voulu vous donner de bonnes nouvelles surtout de votre chère petite. «

L’homme qui avait pris son épouse à Bidault n’est pas non plus un inconnu des biographes du Rimbaud africain : il s’agit de Pietro Felter, qui écrira à Rimbaud, en juillet 1891, de Harar : » Maintenant il me faudrait savoir l’époque précise a laquelle vous descendrez à Aden, et si de la côte (Djibutil ou Zeylah) vous seriez assez gentil de permettre à la caravane de ma femme de s’ajouter à la votre. » À cette date, Felter ignorait manifestement que Rimbaud, revenu en France, n’était plus en état de regagner Aden. Peu après, l’Italien prendra à son service l’ancien domestique de Rimbaud, ce Djami auquel son premier maître avait légué une somme qu’Isabelle Rimbaud eut à cœur de faire parvenir à destination.

En définitive, seuls deux personnages de la photographie s’obstinent encore à garder pleinement le mystère de leur identité : le barbu de gauche et Pyjama. Nous entrons ici dans le domaine des hypothèses, mais, concernant le premier, dont le maintien ne manque pas de solennité, il serait intéressant de retrouver un portrait d’Albert Delagenière, le gérant de l’agence consulaire française à Aden qui fut en relations avec Lucereau avant son départ pour sa dernière aventure. Quant au second, ce Pyjama portant alliance et babouches, et qui fume le cigare, nous ne tomberions pas des nues si quelque descendant de Dubar, l’homme qui engagea Rimbaud à son arrivée à Aden, nous apprenait, photographies en main, qu’il s’agit de son aïeul. Son âge et son attitude pourraient correspondre à ceux du vieux colonial qu’était Dubar. Sa position sur la photographie s’expliquerait dès lors : il est le doyen du groupe, le vieux baroudeur, ses voisins n’étant que de jeunes expatriés. Dans ce qui n’est encore qu’une hypothèse, le cliché pourrait être, à l’origine, un portrait de Dubar, qui apparaîtrait en personnage central, entouré de quelques compatriotes, sur la véranda de l’Hôtel de l’Univers.

Nous avons trouvé récemment quelques précisions biographiques sur ce Dubar, dont on ignorait jusqu’au prénom. Né à Lyon le 31 janvier 1829, François-Aimable Dubar avait été adjudant d’administration à l’intendance militaire de la VIIIe Division à Privas, avait participé à la guerre de Crimée et commandé, avec le grade de colonel — titre qu’il continua à porter une fois revenu à la vie civile — la Cinquième Légion du Rhône pendant la campagne de 1870. Il vint à Aden avec Bardey, en 1880, et en repartit en début d’année 1882. Il s’installa alors dans sa ville natale, où il mourut le 10 janvier 1888. Dubar était le beau-frère de Suel — au moins devait-il se sentir en famille à l’Hôtel de l’Univers —, ayant épousé en 1864, à Lyon, sa sœur Zoe, née en 1833 à Aubenas. Si quelque descendant de Dubar retrouve un album de famille contenant une photographie du » colonel « , il peut nous contacter sans hésiter, nous lui offrirons volontiers un verre.

Quant à Jules Suel, qui était né le 17 mars 1831 à Aubenas et s’était marié le 19 avril 1882 à Aden devant le vice-consul de France, il est mort sans postérité à Ussy-sur-Marne, le 29 novembre 1898. L’état de sa succession montre qu’il n’avait pas réellement fait fortune à Aden. Il est sûr qu’il ne s’est jamais douté qu’un personnage d’une des photographies de son album allait rendre cette image célèbre dans le monde entier, plus d’un siècle plus tard.

En attendant de nouvelles identifications — espérons qu’elles ne tarderont pas et pourront prendre place, avec l’ensemble des documents autour de cette photographie, dans l’article général que préparent activement Jacques Desse et Alban Caussé, les deux découvreurs du document —, il est désormais établi que cette photographie montre des membres de cette petite communauté française d’Aden qui constitua l’entourage de Rimbaud au cours des séjours qu’il passa dans la ville. Il s’agit bien d’habitués de l’Hôtel de l’Univers (pourquoi Suel, propriétaire de l’établissement où a été prise la photographie, aurait-il gardé dans son album les portraits d’inconnus de passage ?) et en aucun cas de simples touristes, comme le prétendaient récemment deux ou trois commentateurs qui parlaient sans savoir et s’exposaient hardiment au soupçon de vouloir faire parler d’eux en prenant des positions antagonistes.

L’un de ces exégètes n’était pas loin de penser que c’étaient des estivants en transit (drôles d’estivants, revenant sans doute d’une après-midi de plongée en Mer Rouge !), un autre attestait qu’il ne s’agissait pas de Rimbaud avec autant d’assurance que s’il l’avait connu personnellement. On serait prêt à vouer à l’oubli de telles considérations si elles ne constituaient un matériau utile pour les futurs exégètes de l’acrimonie et de la balourdise au XXIe siècle.
Sans reprendre tous les éléments donnés dans l’article du n° 41 d’Histoires littéraires, la similitude, trait pour trait, du Rimbaud de ce coin de table adéni avec celui de la photographie attestée par un contemporain comme étant la plus ressemblante du poète, nous remarquons que le portrait retrouvé présente bien plus de similitude avec les portraits de jeunesse qu’avec les autres photographies connues de l’adulte. Certes, ces dernières sont souvent floues et ne montrent guère que l’allure générale d’un visage, mais si leur authenticité ne se trouvait pas attestée par la correspondance de Rimbaud, plus d’un exégète aurait à coup sûr mis en cause cette authenticité dans le cas où le destin n’aurait fait découvrir qu’aujourd’hui ces autoportraits photographiques pris à Harar en 1883.

Au moins la nouvelle photographie aura-t-elle fait rouvrir le dossier de » Rimbaud africain » : des données ont été vérifiées, d’autres complétées, et il a fallu admettre que des ouvrages de spécialistes reconnus colportaient des erreurs ou des approximations assez grossières. En réalité, jamais un document iconographique concernant Rimbaud n’a été étudié avec autant d’attention, et ceci suggère qu’il serait utile de se pencher sur les autres, y compris — et surtout ? —les plus célèbres : qui a étudié attentivement, et sur un tirage original, la célèbre photographie prise par Étienne Carjat ?

Avant de connaître la date exacte de la photographie du coin de table d’Aden, nous avions mentionné, dans l’article d’Histoires littéraires, que l’allure de Rimbaud y était » celle d’un homme fatigué et un peu égaré « , affichant une » expression de lassitude « . Nous savons maintenant que ce cliché a été pris alors que Rimbaud était malade ou se remettait tout juste d’une maladie, après un périple sans doute épuisant le long des ports de la Mer Rouge. Par ailleurs, une des réactions les plus communes, lorsque ce portrait a été rendu public, a été de prétendre que Rimbaud n’y avait pas une tête de poète, que l’on ne retrouvait plus du tout cette expression perdue dans le rêve qu’exprime la célèbre photographie prise par Carjat. C’est, de fait, peu contestable. Mais peut-on en vouloir à Rimbaud, arrivé depuis peu à Aden après des moments difficiles, et se remettant à peine d’une maladie, de n’avoir pas posé devant le photographe comme un poète, ni même comme un ancien poète ? Il faut souvent toucher à l’imaginaire pour revenir à la réalité, et pourtant cette réalité a ici, qu’on le veuille ou non, une certaine puissance d’évocation, qui n’est pas pour rien dans le retentissement impressionnant qu’a eu la photographie depuis sa publication.

Y&R really works it for Toshiba laptops, trying hard to wring some humor out of a strained lab-test premise. The equipment looks like leftovers from Lost in Space, which is cool. The host resembles the sidekick from Home Improvement, which isn't. In this clip, a nerdy assistant named Gary gets "de-resolutionized in the 8-Bitonator 2000," a contraption that looks like a spacepod/public toilet. The dude emerges all wacky-pixilated, like he's made of Legos. The same fate can befall those who use actual public toilets, by the way. They made five of these Web clips, which run about two minutes each. That's about six clips too many. See the others at Ads of the World. They should consider using the retro-tech hardware in that lab to reboot and upgrade the whole campaign.

I have been in the wedding industry for several years as a photographer and I have learned so much about everything to do with weddings. This is sure to be one of the best days of your life and you will remember this day forever. To be certain your loved ones know about your wedding you will want to send out wedding announcements. This is one of the most important things you will do, other than choosing the colors and finding the perfect dress. Photo wedding announcements are a great choice for announcing your wedding, your family will loved them, and it is so much easier than including a photo along with your announcements. Shopping for your photo wedding announcements is fun but can also be a hard and confusing process if you don't know where to look.

First, need to make the decision to purchase your photo wedding announcements or make them yourself. Making your photo wedding announcements is a great way to save money. It can be a lot of work but is a great project made easier by enlisting the help of your bridesmaids. My favorite brand of wedding invitations is Wilton because their website, Wilton print, contains easy to use templates arranged by product. They are also great because their products can be easily found at your local Wal-Mart or Target or you can order them on their Wilton Wedding website. All you have to do is purchase the stationary, follow the instructions, and print.

If making your own wedding photo announcements sounds like too much work there are many different places selling beautiful announcements. There are many different places on the internet to find your photo wedding announcements you just have to know where to find them. I recommended Wedding Invitations by Dawn to many of my friends. Local bridal shops are also great resources for finding your photo wedding announcements and many bridal shops will actually sell them in store.

All of these are great for finding your perfect photo wedding invitations and each of these make adding your photo easy. All you have to do is follow the step by step instructions. For a local store you just need to give them the picture and they do the rest. Now, once you have found a company all you need is the perfect photo. Then there is the guest list, the perfect font, the right wording, and much more. It can be a lot to handle but this information should be a great start to finding the right one. Just be sure to order at least four months in advance to avoid any issues or printing mistakes. There may be many decisions ahead of you but if you think all of this is hard just think what it must have been like in the days before the internet.

This is one of the biggest days of your life, and you want to capture every possible moment. You want every smile and tear caught on tape. A memory of all of your guests in attendance that day, along with your wedding party, and you.

To just open up the phone book will give you overwhelming results. Where do you start? Who can you trust? With so many things to worry about on your wedding day, it helps to have suggestions from those who have already been there. Someone who has experienced this already and willing to offer a helping hand.

There are a variety of options in finding a wedding photographer. You can look in a phone book, look on the internet or ask friends and family. Once you find a few options, you can call each one to set up an interview. They should be willing to sit down and talk to you about their services. I chose a husband and wife who do photography on the side, and I was very happy with the results. I sat down with them before the big event, and we discussed what I wanted pictures of, who I wanted pictures of and how many pictures I wanted taken. They offer a variety of packages, so there is something for everyone's budget.

One thing to remember when finding a photographer is to make sure they are available on your wedding day. They usually get booked fast, so it would help to look for your photographer several months in advance. I found out that spring is a popular time for wedding, so photographers are extremely busy during this time of the year.

One you find your photographer, one of the toughest decisions you will make will be over. You will have the next several months to enjoy a little bit more, and can look forward to your special day.

Some animals have sharp teeth, some have fragile wings, some are predators, some chew on grass, but they all need to survive. Even if harder to believe, some carnivores can be extinct pretty fast, if they don’t find an “intelligent” method of hunting.

On the other hand, small animals with poor defense mechanisms need to find a smart way of surviving and hiding. Nature has found the solution to all these and it is called “camouflage”. That’s the ability of transforming yourself or adapting to the environment you live in, in such a way that you become a contained part of it, that others barely notice you. In one way of another, most of the animals have developed such a skill and they easily trick the eye.

From changing colors to changing body shapes, vertebrates and invertebrates appear as if… they are not there. This post will exemplify the camouflage technique, even in the underwater world. Prepare to train your eyes for spotting the animals and their amazing disguises!
